The Believe In Newark Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the 2017 Scholarship opportunities to High School Seniors graduating and will be attending a four year college and/or university.

Each scholarship has different eligibility requirements and focus areas. It is important that you read below in its entirety to ensure that you are filling out the correct scholarship program. You may apply for both scholarships if you qualify; however you must fill out each application individually.

Amiri Baraka Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship

Overview:

Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship for minority students who are studying or plan to study within the areas of Fine Arts, Music, and Drama/Theatre disciplines in colleges and universities in the United States. The Scholarship Committee aims to increase diversity in creative professions and foster a feeling of social and environmental responsibility among artists. Recipients are therefore selected not only on the basis of their need and talent, but also on their demonstrated commitment to give back to the community through their work. The recipient of this scholarship will receive $6,000. This award will be paid directly to your school to be applied to your tuition.

Requirements:

  • Must be a Newark resident
  • High School Senior attending a public high school (including charter schools) accepted into a four- year college/university majoring in Fine Arts, Music, Drama & Theatre
  • Student must also have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (B average)

All Applicants must submit the following four items in order to receive full consideration:

  1. Program application;
  2. Official high school transcript with raised seal;
  3. Completed essay as instructed below;
  4. Completed 3 to 5 minute visual recording as instructed below.

How to Apply:

  • Complete Application
  • Personal statement essay (500 words or more) That addresses how your talent has demonstrated your contribution and commitment to give back to the Newark community through your work.
  • One 3 to 5 minute visual recording sample. Applicant can use YouTube to record and upload to application.

“I am Newark” Book Scholarship

The “I am Newark” Book Scholarship Program was created to assist students with the high cost of textbooks & study materials. Awards are open to High School graduates that plan to attend a 2-year or 4-year college and/or university. Up to six (6) recipients can receive a $500.00 book scholarship award. This award will be paid directly to your school to be applied to your tuition.

Requirements:

  • Must be a Newark resident
  • High School Senior attending a public high school (including charter schools) accepted into a two or four- year college/university
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5
  • Registered in a two (2) or four (4) year college/university full-time for 2016-2017 academic year

All Applicants must submit the following three items in order to receive full consideration:

  1. Program application;
  2. Official high school transcript with raised seal;
  3. Completed essay as instructed below;

How to Apply:

  • Complete Application
  • Essay (250-500 words minimum) Do you love your community? Do think of it as a family? Through this essay you will be given an opportunity to show your view on Newark and why you love it~ From the outside looking in many people believe that Newark is a dangerous place but to others it’s a place of Heritage and hope.

Shani Baraka Basketball Book Scholarship

Overview:

The Shani Baraka Basketball Book Scholarship Program was created to assist students with the high cost of textbooks & study materials. Awards are open to High School graduates that plan to attend a 2-year or 4-year college and/or university. Up to two (2) recipients can receive a $1000.00 book scholarship award. This award will be paid directly to your school to be applied to your tuition.

Requirements:

  • Must be a Newark resident
  • High School Senior attending a public high school (including charter schools) accepted into a two or four- year college/university
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5
  • Registered in a two (2) or four year (4) college/university full-time for 2016-2017 academic year

All Applicants must submit the following three items in order to receive full consideration:

  1. Program application;
  2. Official high school transcript with raised seal;
  3. Completed essay as instructed below;

How to Apply:

  • Complete Application
  • Essay: As you pursue your college education in 400-500 words: “Describe how the lessons you have learned through playing basketball have positively impacted you”.
