About Newark Youth Council
The Newark Youth Council is a student leadership initiative created by Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka. The Newark Youth Council consists of a group of students appointed by Mayor Baraka to represent issues affecting young people in the City of Newark. The students selected are emerging leaders in their communities and schools who are committed to improving Newark. The members attend monthly sessions where they explore issues affecting Newark such as Education, Economic & Community Development, Civic Engagement, Arts &Culture, and Safety.
Newark Youth Council will be the leading voice for young individuals that share common goals and want to contribute to their city through community service, peer mentoring and leadership development.
Tamara Williams is a senior at Central High School where she maintains a 4.17 GPA. Tamara plans to attend Howard University and major in Rehabilitation Therapy.
Grace Appiah is a senior at Barringer STEM Academy where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. Grace plans to study Social Work/Psychology and minor in Criminal Justice at Rutgers University-Newark.
Infiniti West is senior at Paulo Freire High School where she maintains a 3.42 GPA. Infiniti plans to attend Howard University and major in Business Management.
Maymouna A. Amar is a senior at Central High School where she maintains 4.4 GPA. Maymouna plans to attend University of Pennsylvania and major in Biology.
Rafael Acosta is a senior at Central High School where he maintains a 3.5 GPA. Rafael plans to attend Rowan University and major in Biology.
Mubarak Muhammad is sophomore at Bloomfield College where he maintains a 3.3 GPA majoring in Philosophy and Education.
Israel D. Alford is a senior at Newark Tech High School where he maintains a 3.0 GPA. Israel plans to study Information Technology at Rutgers University- Newark.
